Presentation of the Institute

In its daily work, the GIA deals with basic and applied geological research, e.g. in the field of sedimentology and (anthropogenically influenced) environment as well as sustainable geo-resource management. In the course of the energy transition, the Geological Institute also tackles geothermal issues, especially the regional characterization of potential geothermal reservoir rocks; which can be used to supply future generations with renewable energy.

The use of geothermal, regionally available energy decimates or ends the use of non-renewable energy sources, this promotes not only ecological aspects but also regional site development and sustainable geo-resource management. It promotes the principle of circular economy, as regionally available resources replace additional, external and unecological energy suppliers. At the GIA, regionally existing rocks in the subsurface and their analogues at the surface are investigated to assess their suitability as reservoirs of geothermal waters as well as their utilization. Furthermore, anthropogenically induced material cycles and their influences on the environment are investigated in order to determine a potential negative impact.
